Hello all. Just signed up today to express my idea for an Ace'd Quest Log.
The Quest Log is one of my favorite things to have an addon for, and being such a fan of Ace (I use AceLoot, OneBag, Angler, ChatScroll, Mendeleev, MG2, and ShardAce) I decided that since nobody has done a quest log addon, I might like to try my hand at it.
As for my programming experience, I'm new to Lua. However, I'm NOT new to programming. I program and develop websites as a (paying) hobby, so I've done my share of all-nighters trying to debug why the frickin' script won't query the database correctly! Ugh... bad memories. Anyway, over the next couple of weeks I'm going to be doing my best to learn Lua and to learn why Ace is such a better way to program Addons. I've heard the arguments before, but hearing them and actually knowing what's going on are two different things to me right now. That'll change soon, I hope with the help of the great community I've been watching for the past couple of months.
So, AceQuest! My thoughts on it now:
Two versions: AceQuest One, and AceQuest Two.
One's Features: Very similar to MonkeyQuest. A single window frame with quest levels, a quest minion, etc etc.
Two's Features: Two window frames. Very similar to UberQuest. The left frame listing each quest, with a collapsable second frame to its right giving the selected quest description. Also a quest minion.
The reason for the two versions? Some people obviously prefer the one window for space constraints, and some people (like myself) enjoy a larger area to read and view quests.
To teach myself Lua, I'm going to be going over several tutorials on Lua's main website, and then I'll progress to Ace's Development Starter Kit to scout the examples there. Unfortunately I'm starting a full time job next week, but I'll have some time after I get home to do my research.
If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, complaints, whatever, post them! I'm eager to see what you guys think. Thanks!
Well boys, it's that time for me. I'm done with WoW. With a new full time job, there just isn't enough time for me to justify $15/mo. And I've grown bored with the game since 90% of my friends quit as well.
I personally would like to see a combination of UberQuest and MonkeyQuest. I like MonkeyQuest for viewing a list of my quests, as a tracker, and for brief updates/reminders (mouseover overviews), and I'd love to see the "full page" quest description from UberQuest's second frame pop up instead of the original quest frame when I click on a quest. I don't need two ways to select a quest, but getting the full quest text and the abandon/share buttons and the quest reward icons in one large frame would be totally sweet. Drop the UverQuest full page quest list and have a MonkeyQuest-like quest list/tracker, with the UberQuest full page description pop up for sharing and I'll be a happy happy man.
I have been using Quest-I-On for a long time. Even though it has not been updated since 1.7 (I think) iI am delighted that still works. I use Question instead of other quest addons because of the transparant floating quest menu that I can mouse-over, along with a superior (to Cosmos') question minion.
*shrug* anyway, those features would be desireable (though I do know know if they would be implementable).
