Please, a majority of people are steering away from addons that use Ace2.
Maybe so, but how many people can describe any meaningful technical reasons for their choice, and actually understand those reasons? I'd put money on the majority of your majority being totally clueless and "steering away from" Ace2 addons for the same reason they once flocked to them: they heard some other, equally clueless guy say "X is good/bad" and jumped on the bandwagon.
People don't need to understand all the technical details to make choices. Of course saying "prefer X over Y because it uses Ace 3" is misinformed but you should not dismiss herd behaviour. It is a legit shortcut that exists for a reason in a world of finite knowledge, we simply can not make all our decisions with an expert's insight. Somewhere in between the two comes learning about the basic concepts and design goals of Ace or relying on the opinion of one who has. That there are still so many people misunderstanding what Ace is and consequently shying away from addons that don't use it or deeming them inferior to those that do makes me believe information on the subject is not accessible enough. Or the average user is just damn lazy.
I also want a simple buff addon, but one that doesn't use bars mainly. I prefer icons for less screenspace on long timers, but bars on buffs that are about to run out or have short duration would be ok. Anyway, I wanted to skin the buff icons with buttonfacade, and the possibility to move and change distance grouping f.e.
I found Buffalo and Bison, but both are fairly old. It might not stop them from working, but some comments seemed to indicate a few bugs or missing features. But might just test them anyway.
I also know of Satrina Buff Frames and it looks good, but maybe a bit to much for my needs.
No other simple skin/size/move buff addon that I've missed?
I'm actually testing a bit, have tried Bison and femtoBuff. With Bison which isn't updated for some time, most things were ok. But it didn't seem to support coloring using ButtonFacade. My weapon poison buffs where shown with a white border for example. Positive that it supported 40 buffs and had fairly easy configuration. With femtoBuff (a small skinmod on wowi) I was happy with the appearance, but it seemed to bug out and lock the Buff frame so I could not move it any longer.
Gonna try out a few more, including Buffalo. I saw that there was a "Buffalo 3" beta on Curse, but it some commented that it lacked features from Buffalo 2.
