But there's nothing that comes close to the features I want. The features that cart provided. I think if there aren't massive changes to librock, it would be worth it to get that piece working until (and if) someone comes up with a map replacement we all can live with.
Even if you avoid the "action blocked in combat" error by checking for combat before trying to perform the action, it's still unlikely that Cartographer will otherwise work with WoW 3.3, as major changes were made to the world map.
You say that "nothing comes close" to Cartographer's features, but I'd have to contend that you haven't actually looked, because there are tons of actively maintainted and supported addons available that provide some or all of the features provided by Cartographer and its plugins:
Cromulent is compatible with all world map addons, including Mapster, and replaces:
Cartographer_ZoneInfo
GatherMate is compatible with all world map addons, including Mapster, and replaces:
Cartographer_Herbalism, Cartographer_Mining, Cartographer_Treasure
(It also supports fish schools and gas clouds.)
GatherMate_Data provides a full database import for GatherMate.
HandyNotes is compatible with all world map addons, including Mapster, and replaces:
Cartographer_Notes
I second Blankstare. I'm clinging to Cartographer because I can't find a replacement for Cartographer_Questinfo. It hase a database (from WoWHead?) and puts little dots on the map where somebody looted a questitem before and puts coordinates into the questlog.
I can't find anything to replace this. The new standard feature with its "clouds" is does nothing to replace Cart_Questinfo. Carbonite and Questhelper are memory hogs and I don't need waypoints and taxi arrows.
Cart_Questinfo is still somehow functional together with Cart (minus the look+feel module). Without Look+Feel Cart is clumsy to say the least, so I would be really grateful for any help with either fixing Look+Feel or finding some replacement for Cart_Questinfo.
Btw: I completely understand why Cartographer is dead. It has been for a long while, but after every patch sombody found an relatively easy way to fix it again. My (and probably also Blankstares) question is: Did the patch now break the Rock framework in a fundamental way so its gone for good? Or could there be a way to fix the problems in Look+Feel (because the rest still works) without rewriting big parts of the code?
Maybe somebody knows.
Edit: The integrated Blizz Quest tracking is only half as good. I don't like those big numbers and it gives only areas instead of exact coordinates (for quests with a defined target place). But if there is no alternative, I will have to go with that if Cart finally fails without recovery.
Hi, I know mapster works perfectly with blizzard's own quest tracker (a decent picture of the quest tracker in action can be seen here http://www.wowjuju.com/thumbs/ui2.jpg ). That should fully replace questinfo, the data is from blizzards side, so you have the benefit of not needing to lug around a database wielding addon too. It has been a long while since i used questinfo, but from what i remember of using it, its functionality has been completely incorporated into the game by virtue of the blizzard quest tracker now.
I'm wondering, do all those make the map have those cool features of zooming in and out, getting detailed maps when zoomed in enough, smoothly as cartographer 3 had? Just wondering :o

Try MobMap. It has a full database of quests. It can place dots on the world map (any world map) where quest mobs are and integrates with the quest frame. And you can use its in-game frame to look up every quest, what things drop from, etc. and use that info to coordinate with the quest mob dots.
Its a regular mod & has database updates every single day.
It also has an option (via its "download the installer" link on that page) to install an executable auto-updater. Things like that are not recommended to use for most people; its not open-source either. Long ago, though, I took the leap and started using it (its much more convenient for updating the database) & no problems so far.
So if worried about security, just download the regular mod & database from the Download with the newest English database link(its also available in German). And keep the database updated every few days or so from that link.
Not the most efficient mod in terms of resource usage (similar to QuestHelper and/or Carbonite), but a reasonable alternative to Cartographer_QuestInfo.
Try MobMap. ...

... and that's the problem. The game is no fun with addons like that on my maschine. I don't know what they do differently but Cart_Questinfo could run smoothly even on my very old computer.
Not as much of a problem as it first appears ;). I over-generalized a bit.
I'm about as uptight about excessive resource usage as you'll fine. MobMap comes nowhere near QuestHelper. It only loads its databases on demand when they are needed; they don't get loaded until you use them (less memory). It uses CPU time, but nowhere near QuestHelper. And I used it on my 6-year-old-PC (before upgrading) many months ago without issue.
Of course, don't have it running on my raid characters. Give it a try.

sorry to sound like a stuck record, but if you only want cartographer with Cart_Questinfo, then mapster and blizzards quest tracking feature is the best bet. i might even go as to say better.
The only other addon to provide the google maps style zooming functionality that i can think of is carbonite, however i find it a bit too clunky a map mod since its packaged with an awful lot of superfluous stuff that i wouldnt want with a map mod. also other mods have compatibility issues with it. so its a bit of an all or nothing deal. personally i can do without.

In the end nothing's able to replace good ol' monolithic cartographer. :(

I'd suggest looking into replacements. Mapster is an actively maintained and supported option.
But there's nothing that comes close to the features I want. The features that cart provided. I think if there aren't massive changes to librock, it would be worth it to get that piece working until (and if) someone comes up with a map replacement we all can live with.
Mapster + GatherMate + GatherMate_Data + Cromulent + HandyNotes + TomTom
That's pretty much the bulk of what Cartographer did, and not in a monolithic AddOn. If one breaks or becomes unsupported, you replace it and move on.
You say that "nothing comes close" to Cartographer's features, but I'd have to contend that you haven't actually looked, because there are tons of actively maintainted and supported addons available that provide some or all of the features provided by Cartographer and its plugins:

Cartographer_Notes
HandyNotes_CityGuide, HandyNotes_FlightMasters, HandyNotes_Mailboxes, HandyNotes_QuestGivers, HandyNotes_Trainers, HandyNotes_Vendors, and other plugins are available to add data to HandyNotes.
HandyNotes_Guild is compatible with all world map addons, including Mapster, and replaces:
Cartographer_GuildPositions
TomTom is compatible with all world map addons, including Mapster, and replaces:
Cartographer_Waypoints

If just somebody could port Cart_Questinfo to Mapster or Metamap or whatever other mapaddon. But this has already been discussed and it seems that nobody felt driven to do so (http://forums.wowace.com/showthread.php?t=10649&highlight=questinfo&page=24).
Cart_Questinfo is still somehow functional together with Cart (minus the look+feel module). Without Look+Feel Cart is clumsy to say the least, so I would be really grateful for any help with either fixing Look+Feel or finding some replacement for Cart_Questinfo.

Which addon is that?
Same thing I'm thinking :o

There. Fixed it for you.
