I noticed something odd with Recount on my priest the other day. I had respecced shadow to help gear a new healer. We were running a bunch of heroics and I started to notice a very odd pattern. Although the reported DPS was reasonably high, my damage done was usually significantly lower than the rest of the group. I wrote it off as a possible bug or an issue with DPS calculation. The low numbers made sense to me because shadow is neither my main spec (I suck at it) and my gear isn't exactly optimal for it.
But we've been noticing that the same thing seems to happen with a frost mage. His DPS is high, but damage done falls well below even the tank. He's a competent player, and neither his gear nor spec suck to my knowledge, certainly not to the degree the Recount seems to report. I've never noticed such a discrepancy in ordering before this, usually high DPS ends up high on damage done. Is it some quirk in DPS calculation? Or a bug? Or am I just missing something stupid? I'm trying to figure out which stat is more accurate, or if they're both busted in these situations.
High DPS but low damage means relatively low activity time while showing high burst during that shorter activity time.
If you have doubts about total damage counts, keep a combat log record and calculate the total using some web-stat service. If there is any noteworthy difference to Recount's numbers then I'd be worried that there is a bug.
I've noticed things like that, too. I put it down to running with a lot of AOE players, though, or an AOE tank, since they do more overall damage, but my burst damage on my elemental shaman is much higher.
I am quite sure it is not a Recount bug. I had some similar results when I used another damage meter, Violation. Both calculate DPS using combat activity duration instead of raid duration. That makes more sense, since calculating DPS using raid duration would just be the same view than total damages with different numbers. Please note that combat activity duration is based on combat events, not the total combat duration, raid attendance neither AFKs. You could have unaccounted time inside a single combat (e.g. Heigan phase 2).
