UPDATE: Was in a 10 man instance over the weekend (ZA), and had the same problems I was having in 25-man raids. When Cowtip was running, everything was fine until a boss fight, and about 5 minutes in, my FPS hit <5 and my system slowly ground to a halt. When I typed "/reload" I instantly got a windows memory error and crashed out of wow. brought it back up, disabled cowtip and enabled tiptac. Back in raid, we had to retry the boss (I took all our DPS with me when I crashed). Zero issued for the whole fight.
next boss, went back to cowtip - same problem.
reverted back to tiptac - no problem again
During the whole event, I used Pitbull without issue.
I solo with Pitbull + Cowtip without issue (the occassional 2 second pause when a tip comes up is rare, but does happen)
disclosure: I use other tooltip mods such as informant, auctioneer, multitips, recount (thats the one that compares item stats i think?), and mobinfo. I have not tested raiding with Cowtip and disabling these addons.
---------------------------
without cowtip running, I get an average of 24 to 30 fps during 25-man combat. If I log out, load cowtip, and then resume a fight in a 25-man encounter, my fps plummets to under 5 and quickly freezes wow. If I type /reload, I get a windows memory error popup and wow closes.
anyone else experiencing issues like this? I have used Cowtip for a week now, and haven't had any problems or complaints - but last night was my first 25-man raid using it, and it crushed my client hard.
I had previously used tiptac, but its not exactly an attractive addon (at least for me, Im unable to apply any fonts to it).
Do you think my problem is cowtip specific, or just that Im running too many addons and cowtip just happened to be the one that broke the camel's back?
I've been using StarTip as an alternative to CowTip. It doesn't offer as much customizability but it shows most of the useful info provided by CowTip and with a similar look.
Now I just need to get rid of Pitbull (keeping an eye on AGUF) and I'll be free of LibDogTag.

I really love Pitbull - is there some problem I should be made aware of regarding LibDogTag? I've used Pitbull in and out of raids and other wow activities with no issues at all. The problem seems to be specific to cowtip.
Or could it be the fact that Im running TWO mods that are both calling to LibDogTag?
2 addons both using LibDogtag is fine (sharing the same LIBrary code). What is well-known is that LibDogTag consumes a lot of CPU time and reduces your FPS, but offers customization of text displays beyond what is possible with anything else.

and I have to say this about it as well: I switched from TipTac because my tips were difficult to read, and it refused to allow me to change the font. There's a dropdown there, and all my clearfont2 and sharedmedia fonts are listed, but they never actually apply. It seems that Clearfont2's fontface setting over-rides Tiptac.
anyway, I installed Cowtip and using the same scale/font settings, it was a thousand times easier to read - a much cleaner and crisper implementation of the text - not sure why.
and funny that it works just fine if Im soloing or in a party - but looks like in a raid, I have to revert back to tiptac.
someone suggested Star Tip - I'll give it a try.

NEW QUESTION: the fact that Cowtip is doing this to my ui when in a 25 man raid - is there a hardware upgrade for my computer that would remedy this? I have 2GB of ram, so I cant imagine its that. My motherboard can support a faster CPU than what I have installed, but not significantly faster. Its not a bad PC: was custom built 2 years ago for about $3,200 so its not a Porche but its a really nice BMW, know what I mean? And Im sure I can find a new video card but I do have a very good one.
Outside of a raid group, I get about 35FPS in the world, and in a raid I get about 25FPS during a boss fight. So Im hesitant to think that I need to upgrade here.
What model and speed of CPU do you have? WoW's rendering engine is old, so WoW benefits much, much more from a beefy CPU than from a cutting-edge video card.
If you got a PC for 3200$ your graphic card is normally more than enough for WoW and a new one (like a Radeon 4870) wouldnt really bring a FPS advantage...You can easily test this by just reducing the graphic details to zero and check if your FPS are noticeable higher(Normally you get like 2-5fps more, with a sucky graphiccard its like 10-20 :P)
WoW is normally CPU capped, so a faster CPU or if you dont have ~2-4GB RAM is pretty much the only upgrade you can get.
Don't upgrade your pc on the account of one library. If you had additional issues running WoW itself (no addons installed), then it would make sense. But right now, I wouldn't even consider that in your case.

Off-topic, but I use TipTac, and until very recently I used ClearFont2 as well, and I've never had a problem using the font settings in TipTac.

... LibDogTag consumes a lot of CPU time ...
"A lot" being "nearly as much as all of my other ~150 addons combined", as of the last time I had CPU profiling enabled. The author of LibDogTag has stated that this is a bug, but has also stated that he doesn't have time to fix it. Unfortunately I'm stuck with it, as my bar mod (InfiniBar) for whatever reason uses DogTags to display keybindings and configure range highlighting, and I can't find another bar mod that does what InfiniBar does. ::)
wow, there really should be no reason that the most recent version of LibDogTag-3.0 uses that much CPU time.
hi CK. first let me address you with a thank you. I use ALL your addons, and hope to see more of them soon.
here's my hardware specs from the properties of My Computer:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ 2.21GHz, 2.00 GM of RAM (crucial) on an Asus A8N-E mainboard.
Im not schooled enough to know if my mainboard can host a faster CPU, and if so, what a good price would be for one. Suggestions will be appreciated and most likely followed up on.
Video is NVidia GeForce 6800 GS 256MB PCI-Express x16
(I was offered for free an NVidia 8600 GT 512Mb by a friend when i mentioned my trouble).
Cant say for sure why this happened - and I dont know a whole lot about computer hardware - I know some, but not a great deal. All I know is that my FPS was crit for over 25 when in a 25-man boss fight using CowTip. Rebooting and turning off CowTip, and it was just fine (same raid).
---
and I still prefer CowTip over any other tip mod so far. I _LOVE_ the dogtag system. Just looks like for now, I may need to not use it in raids.
If anyone has any suggestions such as potential addon conflicts (lord knows I have a LOT of addons), it would help me start. I'll try to follow this up next Thursday (my next 25 man raid is Wed) and keep everyone posted (well, those who care anyway).
The video card is a huge upgrade, but you're definitely CPU-limited. My desktop is similar but the CPU is a dual core that runs at a similar speed and I have dual nVidia 7800GTX 256MB PCIe cards in SLI. It runs like a dog in raids, with FPS dropping below 10 sometimes. I could change my resolution to anything between 800x600 and 1920x1200 and my FSAA from 1x to 4x with zero difference in framerate both high and low FPS conditions, so I know it's CPU-bound.
Now I play on an Intel Core Duo 2.5GHz laptop with dual nVidia 8700MB 256MB PCIe in SLI and it's a night-and-day difference.

I dont have the budget for a PC gut rebuild, so I'll probably stick with what I have, and consider an alternative tip addon - which is sad.
TIPTAC: did some testing - made a brand spanking new lvl 1 toon and ran ONLY the following addons: fubar, Clearfont2 (and fontpack), SharedMedia (all three addons), tiptac.
RESULT: In Tiptac, there are only 5 fonts to select from. While they all appear to work, there are only five. Some of them are indeed ClearFont2, but obviuosly they are not all shown. In the Clearfont2 menu, I have over 15 fonts to select from and i tested several and they worked. Also, there are only 3 default fonts for the healthbar / powerbar text information.
There is only one addon called "SharedMedia". Make sure you have an up-to-date version so that your media are registered with all library versions.
when you click the 'addons tab' at login, there are 3 individual addons listed: SharedMedia, SharedMediaAdditionalFonts, and SharedMedia-Blizzard.
I realize they are all part of one package, but I mentioned all three specifically to avoid confusion about whether or not I had the additional fonts enabled.
They're not part of a package. SharedMediaAdditionalFonts and SharedMedia-Blizzard are separate addons. They do not require SharedMedia. They essentially do the same thing as SharedMedia, with different media.
Uhm if you paid 3200$ for that PC 2 Years ago I would kill the "friend" that built the PC.
I had about the same PC and I bought it March 2005 so more than 3 years ago, just a different graphiccard. I paid 1000?(at that time it was around 1200$) without a graphiccard. A good card was ~350?(~400$) at that time so MAX 1600$ wouldve been justified for that PC.
I'm facing the same performance issues and traced it down to Cowtip (or a lib used by Cowtip) as well. According to !profiler Cowtip is using up to 30% of CPU time. Running Pitbull w/o Cowtip is not a problem at all.
Simple test that maybe someone can try to reproduce: When i load Cowtip AND Pitbull (nothing more) I always have a screen freeze for about 1 second the first time i click on my unit frame and the target unit frame shows up. This also happens occasionally when I click on other units during gameplay and becomes pretty worse when grouped or in a raid. Pitbull w/o Cowtip does not show this behavior at all.
I really love Cowtip and I'm pretty sure this behavior has just started recently....
Any ideas other than getting rid of Cowtip?
