I think this is the right place this goes. I have decided to make myself a UI. I have been using the default Blizz UI scaled down and with a few enhancements for ages and I am tired of it.
The first step to actually building my UI after backing up my WTF and Addons folders was open WoW with a blank WTF folder and a blank Addons folder and let the game generate new ones. I then setup the default in game settings like video, sound, key bindings, and default UI options to pretty much what I had before. I then exited the game and installed Pitbull 3.0 to the Addons folder and reloaded entered the game on my main.
All was going alright until I decided to start working on my party frames. I am looking for a way to break apart each person in the party frame so I can move them seperatly. This is sorta what I have in mind for my UI:
I had to read through your post about 5 times before I found "the problem" you want help with....
The closest you can get to "free placement" with PitBull is the Square layout, and you'd have to adjust your unit frame placements to acommodate that layout. Alternatively, you can do what I think most raiders do, and have your party frames only show when you aren't in a raid, and have Grid only show when you are in a raid, so the two can share screen placement.
Also, if you are using Grid, why on earth do you need Decursive? Just set Grid to show a nice colored border on debuffs you can dispel, and then download Clique and configure your curative spells to the desired click combinations. The less crap on your screen competing for attention, the better.
And finally, with your "rough draft" mockup, you have tons and tons of huge things covering half of the screen. You're a mage; you don't have totems, seals, aspects, traps, stings, or downranked heals to manage, and you don't have a huge range of abilities you commonly use, so why do you need so much space for action bars? Try bar paging, or at least get rid of buttons you never use. You can easily combine all 3 healthstone ranks into a single macro that will use the best one in your inventory; no need to waste 3 action buttons for that. Do you really need always-visible buttons to open your professions? Try binding keys directly to some of your actions, such as your mount, and removing those actions from your action bars to reduce screen clutter. (Use an addon like SpellBinder or BindPad to directly bind spells/abilities/items/macros to keys.)
Do you need Recount showing all the time? Don't leave dedicated space in a "block" UI for your damage meter. Move it somewhere else, and bind a key to toggle its visibility.
Oh, and you forgot to leave a spot for your chat frame. :P
Haha, well like the first screen says its only a rough draft. My plan is to have the action bars on the left and right sides go invisible once setup and remain that way unless I need to adjust it. Those abilities with a long CD, e.g. my trinket macros and IB, will go on a much smaller bar probably directly below my own unit frame. The chat box I intend to move to the top left of the screen since when its all said and done I won't have anything else up in that corner. The rough draft blocks are much bigger than what they will be when my UI is done. I wasn't trying to be artistically accurate when making the rough draft as my goal had been simply to make a screenshot with a basic layout of what I had in mind. I have so much on my bars cause I have nothing else to put there lol. I really don't like opening up panels to get access to professions and the like if I can avoid it. You may not think a mage has a huge range of abilities to use but you would be surprised. I use many of the abilities on those action bars quite often pending on the situation. The only ability that could possibly come off is Mana Shield as it is a terrible ability, but I'd rather have it up there and not need it than need it and it not be there.
As to the pitbull party frames, thats a bummer if I can't truly break each one down into seperate people. I guess I'll just have to follow your suggestion and have it occupy my Grids location in the middle when I am not in a raid or I am in a 5 man raid aka 5s arena. Btw, that brings up another question. Is it possible to configure pitbull to show my party frames when I am in party and 5 man raid but vanish when I am in 6 man or larger raid?

I actually don't use PitBull anymore, so I can't check, but there might be an option to hide party frames for 5-man raids. If so, it would be at the top level of the Party options group. I know there is an option to hide them while in a raid group.
I found the option I was looking for. There is indeed an option letting a 5 man or smaller raid appear as like a party but vanish upon a 6th person or 2nd group forming in the raid. What I need now is to make it so Grid doesn't appear until that same 6th person or 2nd group joins the raid.. When I played around with it and tested it the party frames and Grid would overlap. For now I have disabled the 5 man raid like a party option in Pitbull. So as long as I am not in a raid the Pitbull party frames show up and as soon as it converts to a raid they vanish and Grid takes its place.
