Industrial has indicated that he it putting idChat2 up for grabs because he doesn't have time to work on feature requests and bug fixes. In addition it appears that the project has spun into a different direction than he had envisioned for it which isn't necessarily a bad thing however it is an understandable factor in his desire to drop the project. I have spoken with krtek via email and I believe he and I will be picking up the remainder of this project to at least fix the bugs and flesh out basic functionality in the core modules. By Industrial's request we will try to find a new name for the project.
For the sake of posterity, the thing that attracted me to idChat is that it's just a framework for modules so you can use what you find useful and not install the rest! It inspired me to write a couple of modules to provide features of other chat frame addons that I wanted to have but wasn't already written for this framework.
I don't want to speak for krtek about the direction this thing will head because we have not ironed that aspect out. What I do know is that he has fixed a couple of bugs with some modules and he has written a FuBar plugin for the idChat commands. I spent some time this weekend making the Buttons module configurable per chat window in case someone needed to have all of them off except for one chat window (like me). I will probably do a similar thing for a couple other modules. If you have a wish list request for a chat window module, please let us know. My vision for idChat (or whatever we rename it to) is for it to remain a framework for modules that people can choose to use or not use as needed.
There is vChat too. Wouldnt it be better if all developers that make chat mods get together and write a good framework and convert all work done so far to work with it. But i may be wrong because vChat my have a totaly different approach. Its kind of wast of time and resources to write two chatmods using ace if they are very similar. Just my thoughts...
I took a look at vChat and it is more of an integrated solution with everything in a single addon whereas the idChat approach is modular and therefore if I don't want something that added timestamps, I don't have to load an addon that adds timestamps. I'm not saying that vChat isn't what some people are looking for, because it probably is. I'm just saying that choice is good and I don't view it as a waste of resources since both projects take a different approach.
1st off, huge thanks to Id, ive learned a lot from hacking and playing with his code (damn timestamps!!, tho anyone who's seen me on irc knows i still dont know jack =P )
secondly, cheers on picking up the mantle, im a huge fan of the modular-ness (is that a word? lol) of the chat mods Id wrote, i can use and hack what i want and ditch the rest
as for names...
mChat i like
i'ld say kcChat but...yeah, theres that kaelten guy =P
im sure you guys will come up with something ;)
in the meantime, where do i post feature requests?!? :P
When thinking about a name I was trying to also think about what the slash command would be so something long or that doesn't have a nice acronym should be ruled out. Last night I was kicking around the idea of using the swedish word of "chat" which I believe is "prat". Now you're probably wondering why swedish well I like swedish meatballs (mmm.. meatballs), the swedish chef (bork! bork! bork!), ikea, and swedish swimsuit models (hubbahuubba!) so... that is what I came up with. So how does "Prat" sound? That's all I came up with to this point. :)
P.s. I don't mind something sterile like mChat, cChat, wChat, oChat (tho folks would think otravi with that one i am sure), ckChat (though mr. knight would kill us i am sure), kChat, kcChat (though people would be thinking kaelten cycle with that one i am sure), xChat, zChat, or eChat. I was just trying to come up with something different like so many of the other ace addons here. :)
I'll toss in a bugreport here, as it is a really weird one.
Chatframe scrolling does not work in idchat or in vchat without toggling it off and on again after each reloadui. After disabling all mods and enabling some, I found out what was causing it. Strangely enough, it was the combination of idchat, buggrabber/sack and Cirk's Chatmanager. If I only used idchat and chatmanager, it worked. If I only used idchat and bugsack, it worked. As soon as all 3 were enabled, it stopped working.
The strange thing is... It works flawless with the mod ChatMod. Maybe you can take a peek at the ChatMod mod and find out how he initializes the scroll function as his works flawlessly with both bugsack and chatmanager without the need to enable/disable the scroll function after each /rl.

I think aceChat (or aChat) is one of the better names. It's easy to remeber, like Ace2 libs the whole concept is built around being modular, and why come up with something fancy when this is a Chat addon and it uses Ace libs. :)
Please do not use Ace<ModName>, we've been over this before...
Maybe in honor of hyperChipmunk you could name it Chitter (like ChitChat)
Also, I tossed this at indie, I'll toss it at whoever picks this up... I always like modular designs, but I'd much prefer the modules all be subfolders of the main addon. If a user doesn't want a module they can disable it in-game or delete the folder. This design is much more in line with things like KCI, BigWigs, and the like.
I agree it's not a good idea to name any addons with a pre-fix of Ace. I like the unusually sounding names that people come up with (such as Detox, Squeenix, Quecho) or the play on word names (such as Teknicolor). The name isn't super important of course but it can add some spice. I spoke with Krtek via email last night and due to what I can only attribute to my reference to The Swedish Chef (or possibly Swedish Swimsuit Models), he indicated that Prat sounds fine for him. :) So the framework and modules will be taken up under the Prat branding and we will patch/convert the existing modules to the new naming asap. We are currently looking for a marketing manager for the Prat brand and some executive assistants please send tells for interviews. (jk!) :D
Oh Tekkub I get what youre saying about modules being subfolders. There are pros and cons like anything else. I kinda agree that would solve some issues but then I kinda disagree too because it seems to create some new issues as well. In truth I like how addons like FuBar, oRA1, BigWigs, etc. have seperate folders for each module. Maybe I'm just a simple person but that seems like it is easier to know which files/folder to keep if I want to use a module and to delete if I dont want to use a module. Keeping em separate also makes it possible to disable modules from the character select screen instead of loading it up in-game and then turning it off afterwards. I'm not saying I wouldn't be willing to explore the idea.. I'm just saying that I like the practicality of keeping em separate too.
Hah that is kinda funny actually. I didn't even think about trying to translate it back to english. Like I said though, the name isn't overly critical and really as long as the description is accurate, that should be all that matters. Lord knows I have to read the descriptions of many of the addons from this community to know what they actually do. I think that's cool to be honest. Wouldn't it be dull if every addon was named what it does? Instead of spicey and fun names like Bigwigs, Detox, Squishy, Clique, and FuBar you would end up with bland and sterile names like BossTimerBars, CuringTools, HealthMonitor, ClickToCast, and PluginPanel. Hehe. Not that I am claiming Prat is on the same playing field with names like Bigwigs, Teknicolor, etc. but you get the point. :) I love all the creative names.

Thank you to Curney & krtek for taking over development and for staying with the nice design (modules!) of the mod.
Have you come up with potential names yet?
I've no idea for a new name, so if you have one, post it ^^
As soon as the new name is known, we'll "create" new folders in SVN Trunk to commit our job.

As for the name, Prat doesn't sound good to me (it means sth like fool in English), but I guess I can live with it. :)
I would have liked sth like CuTek or Cukr more. ;)
I like this one, and if I could figure out where the emoticon list was, I would put a thumbs up emoticon here. :)
