Or you can try XRS, that has a rangechecker? Nothing fancy, but you can see how many people is in range, and also choose which range to check for.
Ya but if I'm standing in the middle of a bunch of 3 or 4 friends and it says I am in range of 1 person... what good does that tell me? Doesn't help at all really. Just tells me I need to move... somewhere...
Okay it sounds like there are lots of options and lots of different ranges you could check for. But keep something in mind. The point of the mod would be to see if you are too close (or close enough in some cases) to others for raid encounters. Like for Curator or C'thun or Gruul or whatever, I wouldn't bother putting in options for both 10 yds and 11.11 yds. 10 is probably fine. There isn't really any noticable difference between the two anyways. The mod is for checking distance for raid encounters. Am I too close to this person next to me? Am I going to chain cleave to him or chain this chain-lightning to him? etc...
Regarding usage and ui, basically I would imagine it looking very similar to the C'thun assist window. Just a little window that has a list of names that you are 'too close' to (I think C'thun assist also has a part of the window listing who is in c'thun's stomach, obviously this would be left out). At the top of the window perhaps have a simple drop down menu where you can choose "10 yds", "11.11 yds", "~28 yds", etc... And instead of the window giving you a list of people that are "Too close" maybe just make it says "In Proximity" or something similar.
Also, maybe check out the bandage range checking technique. Could maybe also be used for another range to add to the drop down menu.
Honestly I have no idea why a generic range checking mod has never been made. I suggested it be a BigWigs type plugin because there is already C'thun assist and now Gruul assist. Maybe its better as a plugin for oR2? I mean oR2 has some general interface stuff like Resurrection Monitors and stuff, so why not this? It's something many pve'ers would use.
There is obviously the C'thun range check BigWig mod, but there is now a Gruul one. It seems that instead of making a new hacked mod for every new encounter that needs it, why isn't there just a general range check mod? Something where you can specify what distance you want to check for (with limited selection of course due to API restrictions). There are now several more fights, even in some of the 5 man dungeons that would take advantage of this. Some that come to mind: Curator, Murmur (for the "bomb debuff"). More will come obviously.
Ya the Check Interact Distance would be the real way to do this. I saw something else in the Gruul_Assist thread that said the C'thun assist used bandages to check distance with others... I was looking all thru the code and didn't see anything about Bandages. I saw it using CheckInteractDistance at one point though.
C'thun was one of the first fights a while back where your range from you to players next to you had to be watched. So people added range checking stuff into mods like LaVendetta Boss Mods and stuff. Basically a window that pops up saying "You are to close to the following people:etc...".
But now, with Karazhan and other instances, quite a few boss fights are appearing where range between you and your raid members is important, like in the Maiden and Curator fights.
So I'm wondering:
1. Does BigWigs have a range checking feature I'm just not aware of?
2. Are there any standalone Ace range checking addons (No, I'm not looking for addons that highlight/fade/whatever raid unit frames based on range)
