SmartPet 2.5.1 is not broken in 1.8 to my knowledge as mine works perfectly fine. Yes, it's a clunky mod that needs to be Ace'd, but that is what is avaiable until such time that someone Ace's it. I was only offering an alternative.
It has exactly what your talking about with petHP% notification. You set when to warn and what channel to warn to, and it spams the warnings. Easy. <bows out>
I'm not trying to throw around catch phrases. Rather, I'm trying to promote people reading patch notes and the EULA for changes. And in my opinion, EULA changes are NOT documented properly - therfore any changes would be classified by me as stealth. An feeling of "Well, if they see it, they see it..." hovers around the ones responsible for such changes. That's my view.
Hell, if you get technical, my use of the term "pitfall" was inappropiate as well.
The message is: read your shiz before signing the dotted line.
There is an updated version of this via curse. You can find it HERE. This is SmartPet2.5.1. It has much fo the features that your are requesting. I use it myself as a Hunter.
Things to note:
NoChase no longer works automatically with patch 1.7 changes. It now requires a keypress in order to work. SmartPet has now created a keybind called "The Button". This will act as both your attack for the beginning of combat, and your calloff when the message appears on screen. Pain in the ass, yes. But you don't have a choice now if you wish to continue to play WoW. That is, unless you want to use Keyminder.
Also, it has your PetHP autowarning built into it.
As goes for the PVPPet. I like this idea, but I have never used it. I just click off my growl. Hehe.
Lastly, not to be an ass: read your patch notes, and read your EULA agreement. These are Blizzards pitfalls for stealthing nerfs and such into the game. Know them and use them. :)
