I am just learning how to create addons, but thought I would put this out there for someone who is much more versed than I am at the moment. When I first mentioned to my guild that I was going to try out this addon thing, I got very fast response asking if one could be made to help with certain colors of the game. It turns out that some very important pieces of the game play off very commonly difficult to discern colors.
So here is the problem, as it turns out red-green colorblindness is the most common form in Caucasian males. This also happens to be the largest demographic of MMO players. In WAR the difference between shades of red and green play a major role. Examples of where it makes the game a chore, or possibly not playable would be:
Quest status (new/accepted/completed).
Mini-map quest locations (faded red lines on green map)
Larger map quests (still has a shade of faded red)
targeting players (red circle around their feet... many times on green grass)
So if anyone can provide assistance with an addon, that would be great. I guess the largest problem is in trying to quest. If you can't see where the quests locations are, and you never know the status of a quest giver... the game becomes nearly impossible to play.
I just released a beta version of my addon Colorful which can change the color of the cast bar and some other UI elements. After I saw your message, I checked if I could add the features you wanted. However, I couldn't find any way to change the colors you mentioned. I fear they may be hard-coded.
But if anyone finds a way to change them, I can gladly add those features to my addon.
I am colour blind (red-green) and the major problem I have is with the Red and Orange NPC/Mob names. Many times I have ran by (of course with a squishy Zealot) thinking beast / mob is neutral but get attacked, and vice versa: waste time attacking a "path" through neutral NPCs. Being able to change neutral names/info to yellow or pale pink or something would help a lot with these problems.
The map's red areas are also very difficult to see most of the time as mentioned above.
I will have to take a look at Colorful you mention.
one of my friends is colorblind, too.
Yesterday we checked his "quest problems" we didn't understand till then...
He doesn't see the red quest circles on map and minimap.
At quest npc's he doesn't see a difference between done quests and open quests.
Changing the color from red to any other color would be great.
For the quest npc's - why not use symbols in the npc icons instead (or additional) to colors?
For the color blind players it would be a very great thing if someone finds a solution!
And if it's hardcoded - perhaps one of the addon developers has contact to the game developers?
Swift sent me a message about this thread to see if I could help with the game maps after all the work I put into MapMonster. I tried a few idea ideas but unfortunately I have no way to affect the colors or textures used in the map display, they access some data directly entirely skipping all the functions we have access to in writting addons, which was part of the reason for MapMonster.
As for the problems with quest NPC, mouseover tooltips include if the quest is available or complete , the icons above their heads also contains a red checkmark over the book when complete
Did get me thinking though and I cobbled together a simple addon to see if these ideas would be of use to color blind players.
